Going back to where it began. Kulin W.A.
11th September-1957 I wrote this in my early days of being on the Shearing Team
A message from my Sister who called me and said.
Get your self up here there’s a job in the shed.
She cooked for the Carmody’s, and wasn’t it a job.
Cooking for a lot of men, for just a few bob.
So I packed my few clothes into a little radio box.
Shirt, trousers, cardigan, and a pair of socks.
I arrived at Kulin railway Station with no one to be seen.
Then old man Carmody rolled up in his limosine.
We drove for many miles and arrived at the Homestead.
It was late at night and the Shearers were asleep.
Morrie said stay here its late sleep in Phil’s bed.
The next day was my worst experience yet.
The first day on the board i can never forget
They stuck it into me they walked over the fleece.
They yelled and abused me and gave me no peace.
It was hell at the time and I felt like going home.
But with help from another rouse I carried on alone.
Alone I say because you get no support.
When you’re a junior rouse and you haven’t been taught.
I worked very hard I run my legs away.
Me and little Eddy the Gun Rouse of the day.
Later I heard Phill went off his head.
To find out a Rouse had been sleeping in his bed.
As time moved on I became pretty good.
I would pick up for six as any Gun Rouse should.
